Are you looking for a couple’s guide to The Transylvania Mountains of Romania? If you want to disappear into a fairy tale land of castles and mountains, then you have come to the right place. Brasov, Bran, and Sinai are the three most enchanting towns of Romania. They are about two and half hours from Bucharest. You will definitely need a rental car for this trip if you are flying into Bucharest. We were lucky to have local friends to help us with the driving part.
Where to Stay: A Couple’s Guide to The Transylvania Mountains
We recommend staying at Casa din Bran. It’s an authentic Romanian Bed and Breakfast with a refreshing morning view of the mountains. It would be the best option to make this your main stay for two nights.
Don’t forget your travel insurance! We recommend WorldNomads. Make sure to have coverage that includes medical expenses, trip cancellations, and coverage for your belongings from theft or damage. If needed, you may also want to include car rental insurance as well.
Castles To See in The Transylvania Mountains
The Bran Castle was definitely the most magical castle that I’ve seen to date. It had a bit more soul to it compared to the others. It’s also the legendary location of Dracula. Need I say more?
After visiting Bran castle, drive to Brasov. It’s another great small mountain town of Romania. While you are there, find the skinniest street in Europe!
The Street is called Strada Sforii, which means Rope Street. A great craft coffee shop is close by and its called Croitoria de Cafea.
The other castle to visit is the Peles Castle in Sinaia. It’s really different from the Bran castle because it’s so ornate. It’s incredible to see and really takes you back in time.
Sites To See In Bucharest
Start your day by visiting the Stavropoleos Monastery and the Russian Church. The Stravopoleos was built in 1724. It has a really pretty courtyard that is worth the stop in itself.
Another great spot that will help you to stay dry is the Carturesticarusel Bookstore. It’s a lovely place to recharge your devices and have a vegan cappuccino or hot chocolate. It opens at 10:00 AM.
Bucharest also has a lot of neat stores to check out. I’m not usually a shopper, but I was digging the vampire themed souvenirs.
After you have shopped and recharged, make sure to visit the Pasajul Victoria: The umbrella street of Bucharest. This also came in handy for me while I was getting soaked….
If you have a rental car or can take an uber, check out the Park King Micheal I Park. After strolling through the park, I would recommend having dinner close to the park. There are several really nice restaurants in this part of Bucharest.
Next Visit To Bucharest:
The Nor Sky Tower was a site that we didn’t visit on this trip. It is the tallest building and you can visit the 36th floor. Book ahead of time and make sure you have some identification with you.
Another place to visit is the Palace of Parliament of Bucharest. It’s the second largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon.
Best Coffee, Food, and Wine Spots:
- Corks Cozy Wine Bar is a cozy and romantic spot that is perfect for couples.
- The Urbanist is a great spot to have a coffee while exploring the city. It has a swing and a store inside of the shop.
- Origo Coffee, “Its the best coffee selection in Europe!”
- The Food Hood is a quirky spot right in the center of town.
Vegan Options:
- Simbio: VG sandwich
- Arome: sandwiches, smoothies
- Sinbad: Lebanese
- Sublime: vegan burgers
- Aubergine
After visiting, I think 4 days would be ideal for this trip. It would be perfect to allow two days for the mountains and two days for Bucharest.
I hope you enjoyed this couple’s guide to The Transylvania Mountains of Romania and Bucharest. Have you been to the castles of Romania? I would love to know in the comments below. If you are searching for another location to visit, you may want to explore my Krakow, Poland blog post.

December 12, 2019 5:21 amWe have been thinking of visiting Romania for quite sometime now. Of course, the highlight of our trip is going to be the Bran Castle, Dracula’s home. But I am glad there are so many other things to do nearby. The skinny street looks so interesting. And so do the monastery and the church. I would love to check those out.
