The Best Way to Visit the Famous Kinderdijk Windmills

If you are interested in visiting the famous Kinderdijk Windmills, this blog post may help you with your planning. I would suggest visiting in the late spring or summer months.

Where To Stay:

The Augustus Hotel is a really unique place to stay while visiting the windmills. When you step onto the property, you immediately feel like you have walked into a secret garden. The property is waterfront so you can relax and watch the boats and the geese.

Don’t forget your travel insurance! We recommend World Nomads. Make sure to have coverage that includes medical expenses, trip cancellations, and coverage for your belongings from theft or damage. If needed, you may also want to include car rental insurance as well.

Day 1: Downtown Dordrecht

Check into the hotel and take in the beauty of the gardens on the grounds. It’s about a 10 minute walk downtown to Bistro 33. This is a great spot for an aperitif. They have an inviting and warm atmosphere and an impressive wine selection! Either stay at Bistro 33 for dinner or walk back to the hotel to enjoy a fabulous meal at Augustus. They have a wood fired brick oven and use all of their own fresh fruits and vegetables from their gardens.

Day 2: Visiting Kinderdijk Windmills

On day two, enjoy a breakfast at Augustus or check out the local farmers markets in downtown Doredrecht. The markets are there on Fridays and Saturdays. Then walk over to The Kyck over Den Dyck Windmill, which was built in 1713. The entrance fee is €2.00 and children are free. Its open from 10-4:00 PM. If you happen to be there on the first Sunday the month, they have art exhibits from 12:00-5:00.

After viewing the Kyck over Den Dyck Windmill, take the waterbus to Kinderdijk Windmills. The waterbus is a 5 minute walk. You can download the app moovit for updated ferry information. The waterbus will take you to Kinderdyck. I would recommend renting bikes there.You will need to put a €50 deposit down. The bikes were €4 per person a day.

After visiting the windmills, head back to town for a free walking tour or climb to the top of The Medieval Grote Kerk. It has 275 steps and an awesome view of the city at the top. 

In downtown Dordrecht, you will find a lot of antique shops and restaurants downtown. A great restaurant with vegan options is Bluebirds in the Backyard. Another restaurant that we like is Jongepier because it’s right on the water. If you are lucky, you may catch a beautiful sunset.

Day 3: Visit Bergen Op Zoom

On your last day in Dordrecht, check out Coffeelicious for a breakfast or brunch.

You could then use this day to rent bikes to ride around Dordrecht and then move on to your next Netherlands town. I recommend Bergen Op Zoom. If you like the small town feeling, Bergen Op Zoom is a great place to visit where you truly can get a better understanding of the Dutch culture.

We stayed at Grand Hotel De Draak. It’s the oldest hotel in the Netherlands and located right in the main square of the town of Bergen Op Zoom. It’s dates all the way back to 1397!
