A 3 day road trip through Wallonia, Belgium is a perfect adventure for couples. My husband and I recently were able to visit the Wallonia region of Belgium by car. The Wallonia region of Belgium is the French speaking area of the country.
Where To Stay:
This itinerary includes visiting Chimay, Dinant, Namur, and Mons. I researched several Belgian towns and Dinant appeared to be the dreamiest destination, therefore we based our stay there for two nights. On the third night we stayed in Mons, Belgium. Dinant is definitely the most picturesque!
If you visit Dinant and enjoy Belgian beer, then staying at the La Merveilleuse by Infiniti Resorts will be the best option. It’s where the Maison Leffe, the museum for Leffe Beer is located. Infiniti Resorts is located on top of a large hill so it has the best evening views of Dinant. It’s a former convent so it’s full of history and charm.
They also give each person that checks into the hotel a €25 voucher for the local casino if that interests you. This hotel not only has character, but it’s conveniently located in the heart of Dinant.
Don’t forget your travel insurance! Make sure to have coverage that includes medical expenses, trip cancellations, and coverage for your belongings from theft or damage. If needed, you may also want to include car rental insurance as well.
Day 1: Chimay and Leffe
The Chimay Experience: Wallonia Belgium
Chimay is a Belgian town where the Chimay beer is brewed. It’s a Trappist beer brewed by monks. Six of the Trappist locations are located in Belgium.
At The Chimay Experience, you can visit a small interactive museum complete with a tasting for €6.50. There is also a hotel, restaurant, and a souvenir shop connected to the museum. Chimay is also well known for their variety of local cheese selections.
You will also want to visit the Scourmont Abbey, which is about a ten minute walk through the forest. It is possible to drive if you prefer. It’s a really serene and peaceful experience. I recommend giving yourself about two hours to visit The Chimay Experience . You may need more time if you plan to visit the Castle in Chimay.
The Leffe Experience:
After visiting Chimay, it’s a one hour drive to The Leffe Museum. It is similar to Chimay’s museum except it has an incredible view!
The museum has interactive I-Pads with fun quizzes about the beer and information about how it’s brewed. It is €7.00 to visit and that includes a souvenir and a tasting.
The best part is of course the tasting at the end. I would recommend going while it’s warm during the summer so that you can spend some time outside in the grassy area soaking up the sun and the views of the town.
For Dinner, you will want to make a reservation ahead of time especially during high season. This charming town does get busy as it is a touristic area. There are a lot of restaurants but we know a few locals and they recommended Chez Bouboule. Chez Bouboule is recognized for it’s extensive menu of mussels and frites.
An additional bonus will be the beautiful waterfront views of the Meuse River. The town is really just picture perfect and has a slow pace to it that makes it the perfect couple’s retreat.
Day 2: Dinant
Here are some ideas for your second day in Dinant.
We started our day by exploring and walking through the town. Then we made sure to find the Sax Museum. It’s a really small museum and it’s free to visit. The museum is a must see if you are in Dinant. Dinant is home to the creator of the saxophone, Adolphe Sax. The town is filled with saxophone shaped chocolates, souvenirs, and sculptures.
After visiting The Sax Museum, you will find the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Citadel of Dinant. The Citadel is a steep 408 stair climb or a quick gondola ride to the top. The stairs are no joke. We wanted to experience both so we rode the gondola up and took the stairs down. The views are pretty amazing and there is a lot more than just a view at the top. There is a restaurant, a hotel, and it’s quite an experience to visit this historical war site.
River Cruise: There are larger boat tours that you can take along the Meuse River, but we recommend renting your own boat. It’s pricey at 52 euros per hour but well worth it if you are wanting a nice romantic day activity. It was the highlight of the trip for us. The boats are really easy to drive and they go nice and slow, so it’s also very relaxing.

Day 3: Namur and Mons
Namur: Wallonia Belgium
After checking out of the hotel on day three, there are several options. You can go to visit the Caves of Dinant, rent kayaks, see the local ostrich farm, taste more Belgian beer at the Caricole Organic Brewery, or visit the town of Namur. As you can see, it would always be lovely to have more time to explore Wallonia Belgium.
We chose to visit the Citadel in Namur. The citadel in Namur is much larger than the Citadel of Dinant. It has a perfumery and restaurants at the top. We drove straight from Dinant to Namur and the parking was easy and free at the Citadel.
You can visit www.namur-tourism.be for more info.
Where to Stay in Mons, Belgium
Martin’s Dream Hotel is the perfect place to stay inMons, Belgium. It’s a small boutique 4 star hotel that is in walking distance to lots of shops and restaurants. We like to find hotels that have a bit of character to them and Martin’s Dream definitely has that Belgian history and charm. The hotel is a converted chapel with large Gothic windows.
Mons: Wallonia Belgium
We ended our Belgium road trip in Mons, Belgium. It’s a small quaint town in the Wallonia area. If you visit Mons, make sure to find the lucky monkey. It is legend that he will bring you good luck and fortune if you rub his head. He’s easy to find and located right in the town center in front of the town center building.
If you are a vegetarian, there is a restaurant called Maximes that has a vegetarian burger option.
If you are looking for more breweries to tour, we really enjoyed visiting the De Konick Brewery in Antwerp, Belgium. I hope that you liked this post. If so, you may want to read my blogpost about visiting the brewery in Antwerp.
As always, thank you for stopping by. A bientot! Sharing is caring. Pin the image below to save it for later.
