Writing My First Book

“Traveling—it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”

― Ibn Battuta, The Travels of Ibn Battutah

I am writing a book!

My book is a memoir and a photo-diary about being a “traveling or trailing” spouse. I know how many feel about the term, “trailing spouse.” You will have to read my book to find out more about my perspective on the label. Anyway, many of you may see that I haven’t added any travel content lately. In 2020, I lost my desire for travel writing. I think it’s obvious why I may have lost my mojo for writing travel articles. As we were in lockdown most of the year, like everyone else in the world…

Writing a Book: Progress and Challenges

So in 2021, I decided to start putting together my story. I didn’t make as much progress as I thought I would because we were busy exploring and moving to our new home in The Netherlands. I also struggled to figure out how to actually begin writing my first book.

It may seem silly, but I had previously used WordPress for the blog. I haven’t actually used the Word program for many years. Even while I was teaching in Chicago, we used Google Drive to co-create documents. The first program that I attempted to use for creating my book was called Bookwright. I think it could be a nice program for a smaller project. The problem that I had with this program was that I found myself formatting text boxes and images more than I was writing. I then moved my writing to Google Drive. My issue with Drive was that I couldn’t format photos the way that I had imagined. So now I have moved my work into a Word document. It’s definitely a work in progress. I find writing a book is a lot like running a website. It’s a lot of trial and error.

Well our life is again shaking up as we begin to repatriate back to the United States. So my book is on hold. I hope you will stay tuned…

Thanks for stopping by and Abientot! Meg
